We based our tests primarily on the balance of the espresso we made using three different freshly-roasted bags of beans, but were impressed by the reliability of the milk-based beverages. ![]() Still, 16 drinks is more than enough to hit all the basics and more: you get an array of espressos (hot and cold) long black or Americano coffees and milk-based macchiatos, cortados, lattes, and cappuccinos. ![]() The Jura lists 32 different programmable beverages, but that's a little misleading, since the brand counts each beverage available once as a single and once as a double. The lattes came out picture-perfect with sudsy microfoam. The espresso was even better, but know that the built-in grinder more than suffices. We put our coffee through the best coffee grinder for espresso, the Baratza Sette 270, and sent it into the shoot as well to see what came out. If you'd like to bypass the grinder in favor of one you already have, there's a shoot for pre ground coffee in the back. Others have come close, and most have sadly been far from it. This is the first of any of the automatic espresso machines we've tested that has actually achieved true espresso as defined by the IEI. However, we measured the percentage of total dissolved solids (TDS) of its espresso using a densitometer and found that it met the Istituto Espresso Italiano's requirements of between 7% and 12% TDS. Since we can't see inside the machine, we can't verify this. The Z10's "product-recognizing grinder" (PRG) has a sensor that dials grind size based on the beans and adjusts them in real time to make sure they're optimized for brewing. The best burr grinder is, apart from the coffee beans themselves, the first make-or-break step in quality espresso. Besides coffee drinks, the machine can also puts out milk foam or hot water by itself for tea.Fresh coffee beans queued up in Jura's Z10 hopper. Water is pumped through the grounds in bursts using Jura’s Pulse Extraction Process (PEP), which yields rich, full-flavored results to rival a barista’s creations.Įach drink can be individually programmed with ten strength settings, three temperature settings, and a range of size options. The machine then grinds a serving of beans and pulls the coffee using a high-performance 15-bar pump. When you’re ready to make drinks, choose from one of the options on the machine’s display screen: espresso, coffee, Americano, cappuccino, macchiato, or Caffè Barista. Next, add whole beans to the built-in hopper (you can also use coffee grounds, but obviously whole beans are preferred). Then, add the included smart water filter (really) to the tank, which automatically filters a serving of water for each pull. So how does the E6 work? First, during setup, you test the hardness of your tap’s water and tell the machine. It is on the pricey side (compared to single-serve machines) at $1,700, but you’ll likely recoup that cost by avoiding those $8 drinks at your local coffee shop. Pick it up in the new dark inox colorway at Williams Sonoma (pictured), or in platinum or piano white on Amazon. If you’ve been looking to upgrade your coffee or espresso machine, the E6 is certainly worth checking out. It’s that easy, and the results actually taste like coffee shop drinks (not water single-serve espressos). But, unlike other espresso machines, it does all of this with the touch of a button: Place your cup under the spout, press cappuccino, listen to the machine grind a perfect serving of beans, and watch a frothy cappuccino appear in the cup.
